The Iguassu Falls Ferry Experience

The Iguassu Falls ferry crossing from Puerto Iguazu's port in Argentina to Paraguay's dock on the western coast of the mighty Parana River is something Iguassu Falls visitors shouldn't miss experiencing!

This car ferry shuttle service serves mostly local people moving merchandises in between Argentina's Puerto Iguazu and Paraguay's Ciudad del Este cities, an aspect that makes this short but fascinating river journey even more interesting giving it a very local flavor.

During your Iguassu Falls ferry crossing you will interact with the locals, Brazilian small merchants speaking in Portuguese, Argentines in Spanish and Paraguayans in their native Guarani language.

Iguassu Falls Ferry The ferry will most probably be full of small vans packed with groceries and other merchandises, local people chatting about everyday business matters or yesterdays football play, all this surrounded by the extraordinary environment of the lower Iguazu River just before it pours into the Parana.

On your journey towards Paraguay (going westward) you will be sided on your left by Argentine territory, to your right by Brazil's and on front of you Paraguay and yes you will be crossing the imaginary point where the borders of these three countries meet, it's the called Triple Frontier!

Crossing to Paraguay Do you need a Paraguayan tourist visa to do this journey? No if you don't plan to disembark the ferry, just stay on board when it arrives to Paraguay and return right back to Argentina. The round trip takes less than an hour. If you want to disembark please read my visa requirements page for further information.

The Iguassu Falls ferry runs from Monday to Friday from 7am to 5:15 pm and the round trip pedestrian ticket (with no car) is worth less than USD 10 per person, a very cheap price for such an interesting experience!

View of Brazil from the ferry If you are moving on your own you will need to take a taxi from your hotel to the port of Puerto Iguazu, bring your passport with you because you will pass an immigration control. The ferry is called "balsa" in Spanish and you can tell the taxi driver that you intend to take the ferry to Paraguay saying in Spanish "quiero tomar la balsa a Paraguay".

This ferry experience is yet little known to tourists but in my opinion it deserves to be considered a must-not-miss tourist attraction, that's why I always try to include it my customer's planed itinerary.
